Dr Singh to land in ‘cleansed’ Thimphu

The unholiness in Druk regime has been wash off from Monday – that is what Indian political captain Manmohan Singh thinks of, when he plans to travel this new democracy in May.

He was still a young when democracy cam to his country about 60 years ago and failed to suck the nectars of fresh democracies. Fortunately, the tiny protectorate in northern border, made it for him.

For the last one and half decade, there had not been any visits by Indian prime minister. Ironically, this coincides with the initiation of King Jigme Singye Wangcuck to evict the southern citizens.

He might hastily shake hands with the new democratic prime minister of that kingdom, though he had already met Mr Thinley.

Should his visit also coincide with the coronation of the young king? The ceremony would be desperate taking into consideration the failure of his uncle to get votes, even to be a stronger opposition.

The Singh is also expected to make round trip to Nepal to ensure the Chinese influence did not get hold in even if the communist get majority. But his focus will be on capturing the power sector of Bhutan.

Having capacity of over 30,000 MW, India has already captured some 1,300. With clouds hovering over in forging alliance with the US in nuclear energy production, the turban man hopes to tape some energy from his Himalayan kingdom to meet the growing needs.

His visit is also to indicate embrace from Indian side the transition of the kingdom from absolute monarchy to constitutional. However, reluctant to get into that part of the world despite several schedules, Singh’s schedule could also face similar consequences.

He has, after the Monday polls, vowed to “provide all possible assistance to the royal government of Bhutan during its period of transition.” The assistance package will get its shape during the visit. Am I correct?

“His majesty’s personal guidance, meticulous planning and constant support throughout have contributed to the success of this historic enterprise,” the External Affairs Ministry of Singh said in a statement.
