Rivers continue to kill students
Nearly a year and half has passed by when the Wangchu swept away a student to which government turned a deaf ear. A group of Thimphu residents, failed to get response from the government, took a peace march to parliament to submit petition to the government.
The peace march to submit a petition had drawn nationwide attention and some declared the first civil disobedience of the country since 1990. Good number of people from the capital city had given their support to the cause.
Government threatened to take action for such ‘undemocratic manner’. So feared, the government said the trend might bring in chaos and instability to the nation. Facing criticism to the reaction, the government had assured bridge to rivers to ensure safety to the student while going school.
Similar incident occurred in September 2010. Another similar accident occurred in Sarpang in October the same year. But people remained silent in hope to get government response. Time passed without any action.
The story repeated on April 24. A 21-year-old boy has drowned in the Punatsangchu River yesterday. He was a class XI student of Punakha Higher Secondary School. The incident took place at around 10:30 am.
Is the government concerned about life of students?
