Flaw in LG gewog distribution

Druk National Congress has raised a genuine concern over the delimitation of the districts for the local government election. There hasn’t been fair distribution of local representations in the district’s local government.

In wake of LG election, the local government will be endowed with substantial funds for the development projects. DNC has expressed concern that gups/ gewogs distribution doesn’t reflect the size of electorate.

For example, according to electorate statistics 2008, Wangdue Phodrang in west with electorate population of 14,807 has been delimited for 15 gups/ gewogs while Samtse in south with electorate population of 34,958 also has 15 gups/ gewogs. Trashigang in east has 15 gups as well whose electoralte population is 29,080.

There is an imbalanced distribution of Gewogs in districts in proportion to their size and population. The party said it is apprehensive that development activities in larger districts could be handicapped, particularly after the local government elections, if funds are allocated to districts based merely on the number of Gewogs under it.

The party has urged the government to rectify this policy so that no political crisis arises as a consequence in future.

The first local government elections in the country is scheduled for June 27.
