Taiwan’s vice presidential candidate in Bhutan visit

Bhutan is currently hosting Taiwan’s vice presidential candidate Lin Ruey-shiung as state guest since Thursday. Lin, a professor of public health, had arrived Thimphu in his endeavour to learn more about happiness.

Lin said of his impression about Bhutan on landing that the Himalayan kingdom has a higher standard of living than Taiwan, as well as better infrastructure. His statement of ‘better infrastructure in Bhutan’ rather seems to be satirical. Bhutan in no way has better infrastructure than a technologically advanced country Taiwan.

He also commented that there is a sense of tranquillity in the country and that the pace of life was slower than that in Taiwan. He said, he wants to bring back peace and happiness to Taiwan from Bhutan.

Lin is more impressed by the government services in Bhutan where basic health care and education is free.

Lin is on a four-day visit to Bhutan just before the election for president and vice president is held in Taiwan. The election is slated for January 14. His running mate from People’s First Party (PFP) is James Soong.

Lin, who visited few Buddhist monasteries, will see King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk today.

Formed in 2000, the PFP, which is chaired by Soong, is a minor political party that split from the ruling Kuomintang.

None of the Bhutanese media has ever given any coverage to his visit, giving space for speculation that Bhutan is not interested with this man who stands against Chinese interests in Taiwan.
