China establishes police station along Bhutan border
China has established its highest border police station at 5,373m above the sea level on its border with Bhutan in Shannan prefecture and another at Nyingchi prefecture, along the border of Arunachal Pradesh. The second post stations all female police personnel.
Critics say the moves are aimed at keeping a close watch on a road connecting Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh with Bhutan. Tawang was once part of Bhutan and was ceded to India during the reign of third king Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
The stations are likely to watch the Tibetans trying to escape across the border.
The Pumaqangtang village of Shannan prefecture along Bhutan border has only 900 residents. Chinese local authorities say the moves was to maintain peace and stability and enhance social development along the border villages.
After Chinese and Nepalese government agreed to curb Tibetan escape through Nepal, Chinese authorities fear that Tibetan dissidents might use the Bhutan route to escape from China.
