Scammers target Bhutanese in New Zealand
After United States and Australia, now the scammers are targeting the resettled Bhutanese in New Zealand.
According the latest news, a migrant has paid more than $1000 to a man claiming to offer New Zealand citizenship in a new phone-calling scam. The scammers are asking the newly settled people to send money through Western Union.
In the latest incident, the caller introduced himself as being from the non-existent ”Asian Minority Group of Internal Affairs in Wellington”. They are targeting migrants from Nepal and Bhutan.
After the incident Internal Affairs Department of the country has issued a warning to stop any more migrants paying money for ”documentation fees” via Western Union.
The caller appears to know detailed information about the families he is ringing and explains that he can provide citizenship but money needs to be paid via Western Union to Nepal for certain document transfer fees. One person made two payments via Western Union of $984 and $485.
The local authority has asked to contact police and Western Union wherever they are asked to pay money under such circumstances.
